To the Mirror That Changed Me
Sometimes the clearest view of ourselves comes from outside. A glance, a word, a moment—that doesn’t just reflect us, it reshapes us.
We don’t always notice our mirrors when we first meet them. Sometimes they’re people. Sometimes they’re failures. Sometimes they’re quiet, ordinary days that cracked something open.
For me, it wasn’t anything I could have imagined. It was a challenge I couldn’t out-think. A silence I couldn’t break. A phrase or word I couldn’t find. How stuck I felt. But in that tension, I began to see. I wasn’t wrestling with the world. I was wrestling with myself.
That’s the role of a mirror—not just to reflect what we are, but to reveal what we’re not ready to admit. What we hide. What we need to become. The best mirrors are rarely gentle. They’re honest. They ask, Is this really who you want to be? And they don’t look away.
Sometimes a mirror is a friend who tells you the hard truth. A child who watches everything you do. A mistake that teaches you your limits. A goal that exposes what you fear. Whatever form it takes, your mirror holds the key to growth, if you’re willing to look.
So this is a thank you.
To the things that hurt just enough to wake me up.
To the people who didn’t let me lie to myself.
To the silence that taught me what I needed to say.
To the reflections that weren’t flattering, but were real.
Thank you for making me more than I was.
We live in a world of projections. But in the mirror, you resonate: truth sees you, and you see the truth. Whatever you are, or think you are—the mirror will show you.
If you're lucky, the mirror has seen you.
If not, be brave enough to look when one appears.
